Monticello woman charged with murder in infant’s death
Kanikka Jenkins, 26, of Monticello, had her first appearance in the Drew County District Court last Thursday, where she is being charged with first-degree murder of her 19-month-old child.
Jenkins, formerly of Dumas, is currently in custody at the Drew County Detention Facility. Her bond has been set at $100,000.
According to an autopsy performed by the Arkansas State Crime Lab, the child suffered from broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a perforated bowel, cuts on the inside of the lips and previously broken ribs.
The doctor at the crime lab informed Monticello Police Department officers Hank Hollinger and Robert “Bo” Norris that the child also suffered from blunt force trauma to the abdomen, according to court records.
Jenkins was interviewed by the MPD. She was defensive, according to court records, and stated that she did not do anything to her child.
On Sept. 6, 2017, Jenkins and her boyfriend took the child to Drew Memorial Health System emergency room for examination at approximately 1:30 a.m.
The infant was pronounced dead at 5:31 a.m.
Jenkins has three other children that have all been placed in protective custody.
At this time, no court date has been set.
