The Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Association and guests enjoyed meeting outside, under the trees at Town & Country Feed and Trailer Store on Hwy 425 South of Monticello, June 18. President Jason Meier welcomed those present and asked the blessing for the meal. The group enjoyed a delicious Fish supper sponsored by Drew County Farm Bureau. The association greatly appreciates the support of Drew County Farm Bureau.
The speaker for the meeting was David Goodman with Desha County FSA office in McGehee. He was there to encourage us to apply for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), if we have not already done so. CFAP will grant payments to farmers and ranchers who have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Starting May 26 through August 28, producers should contact their Farm Service Agency office by phone, since the offices are open by phone appointment only. Phone, email, and other online tools will be used by FSA to make sure that applications get processed.
Next on the agenda, Dale McKiever auctioned over 25 desserts for our annual scholarship fund raiser. Along with some donations, the effort brought in just over $2,500. The deadline for returning the applications along with current transcripts, is July 31st. Applications are available by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or can be picked up at Town & Country Feed.
In the business portion of the meeting, it was decided that we would cancel July and August meetings and plan to next meet in September. Since the Drew County Fair, in some form, is presently planning to convene the third week in September, the D/D Cattlemen should be on the lookout for the postcard to announce the meeting or look on the Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Association Facebook page. The Association agreed to contribute $500 to the Drew County Fair Premium Auction for 4-H and FFA Livestock exhibitors.
