Sounds of gunfire rang out around 10 p.m. Friday, May 22, on Hillcrest Street, when a domestic disturbance turned violent. Now, a Monticello man is facing four counts of battery in the first degree after the shooting that left four injured. Tyvion Shaw, 23, was arrested after turning himself in.
Police received a call reporting the incident shortly after 10 p.m.
“The shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance,” stated Akers in a press release Saturday, May 23. “Four shooting victims were hospitalized but are in stable condition.”
As officers worked to locate the suspect, who was witnessed fleeing on foot with a semiautomatic rifle, a large block including Bolling Street, Pine Street and Maple Street were sealed off with the assistance of the Drew County Sheriff’s deputies.
Detectives on the scene, according to Akers, recovered multiple items of evidence, including the handgun believed to have been used in the incident, an AR-15, SKS rifle, a shotgun and ammunition.
Shaw turned himself in without incident at the MPD hours after the shooting.
Shaw was initially charged with four counts of battery in the first degree. The final charging decision will be left to the prosecuting attorney once who investigation is compete.
Akers praised the DCSO and Drew Memorial Health System staff, stating, “the work performed by the emergency room staff, as well as the assistance of the DCSO was vital in the quick resolution of this incident.”
