Workers Spread seeds for Quails at Lake Monticello

Recently workers planted a wildlife seed mixture on native warm season grasses and variety of other plants that are attractive for Bob White quail and a host of other wildlife species. The planting was a part of an initiative that began months ago when the Monticello City Council voted to support a resolution to restore wildlife habitat on city owned property that surrounds the lake.

Some of the seeds in the mixture are:

  • Big Bluestem
  • Indian Grass
  • Little Bluestem
  • Black-eyed Susan
  • Prairie Blazing Star
  • Cardinal Flower
  • Compass Plant
  • Illinois Bundleflower
  • Lanceleaf Coreopsis
  • Butterfly Milkweed
  • Common Milkweed
  • Narrowleaf Mountainmint
  • Pale Purple Coneflower
  • Partridge Pea
  • Purple Coneflower
  • Purple Prairie Clover
  • Rattlesnake Master
  • Sawtooth Sunflower
  • White Prairie Clover
  • Wild Bergamot
  • Wild White Indigo

According to Wildlife Biologist with Pheasants Forever and SEARK Chapter of Quail Forever, Austin Klais, it will be next year before most people will notice a change in the open areas near the boat ramp at the Hunger Run Access to the lake. Earlier this year the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission conducted a prescribed fire at the site to prepare it to be planted. Klais said that during their first year most of the plants in the seed mixture will spend their energy becoming established and it will be the second growing season before a noticeable change will be visible to most observers. Students from area schools will be aiding in additional plantings at the lake in March.
