Relay-for-Life event Saturday in the park

The Drew County Relay-for -Life Committee is gearing up for the annual Relay-for-Life fundraising event, benefiting the American Cancer Society. This year’s event will be held beginning at noon Saturday at McCloy Park.

Stacey Midwell, publicity chair for the committee, said the activities are set to begin at noon, and will last until midnight. Traditionally, Relay-for-Life is held from dusk until dawn in honor of the patient’s journey through a cancer diagnosis.

According to the Relay-for-Life website, dusk is supposed to represent the diagnosis. The walking through the night represents the patient’s treatment. Dawn represents the patient’s survival.

While Drew County has held to the traditional Relay format in the past, Midwell said the committee decided to try something new this year in hopes of getting more participation.

“We will still have the luminary service around 9 p.m. because that’s about when it gets dark enough to have it,” Midwell said. “We are just starting the activities earlier in the day to hopefully attract more participation.”

She said the crowds would begin to clear after 10 p.m. in recent years, with almost no one staying until dawn.

Midwell said the committee voted to have an Elvis impersonator this year.

“We thought it would be fun, and get a lot of people involved,” Midwell said.

Entertainment Chair Brittany Sears said entertainment will be provided throughout the day.
