Billies and Lady Billies Hoops updates
The Monticello Billies and Lady Billies have officially started conference play as of Tuesday, Jan. 5, hosting the Crossett Eagles.
In the first contest of the night, the Monticello Lady Billies could not get anything going offensively as the Lady Eagles outscored Monticello 25-4 in the first quarter. Monticello was able to double their scoring output of the first quarter in the second, but Crossett still outscored the Lady Billies 13-8 in the quarter to take a 38-12 lead at the half.
Lakieah Miller scored seven points for the Lady Billies in the third quarter, but Crossett bested Monticello 12-10 in the quarter and 5-1 in the fourth to take a 55-23 victory.
For the Lady Billies Lakieah Miller and Jayvionna Parks each scored seven points with Shariah Singleton scoring four. Audrey Howard scored three and Aniyah Ferrell rounding out the Lady Billie scoring with two.
With the loss, the Lady Billies fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Taking the court after the Lady Billies, the senior boys were able to maintain their undefeated record, defeating Crossett 57-36.
The Billies jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead behind KJ Burks’ six points followed by Burks scoring eight in the second helping Monticello to outscore Crossett 14-12 for a 31-18 lead at the half. Crossett continued to play Monticello close in the third quarter as the Billies took the third 12-10 to lead 43-28 heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the Billies continued to score in double-digits to outpace the Eagles 14-8 to take the 57-36 victory.
Leading the way for the Billies was KJ Burks with 24 points followed by Jalen Green with 11. Nick Smith added eight, Nichalon Smith with five, and Ked Anderson with three. Quay Rhodes, Brooks Bowman, and Keith Wells Jr. rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Billies travelled to Star City for their second conference game of the week on Friday, defeating the Bulldogs 59-54 to improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Billies will be on the road on Friday, January 15, to take on Camden Fairview in 8-4A action.
The Lady Billies are currently adhering to Covid-19 protocols with games to be rescheduled.
