Boll Weevils Men's Hoops off to a strong start
The UAM Boll Weevils got off to a good start to open the 2021 GAC season with a 78-65 win over the Wonder Boys at Steelman Field House on Thursday, January 7.
UAM scored first in the first half and led the entire half with their biggest lead of the half being 11 points on two different occasions in the half before Arkansas Tech was able to cut the lead to eight points 32-24 at the half.
UAM continued to lead throughout the second half with the biggest lead of the half and game coming with 6:01 remaining in the contest after a layup by Lemmie Howard gave the Weevils a 20-point, 68-48 lead.
The Weevils would lead by double-digits for the remainder of the contest securing the 78-65 win.
UAM shot 45.7 percent from the field in the contest and 37.5 percent from beyond the three-point line. UAM also connected on 30 or 38 free throw attempts for a 78.9 percentage.
For UAM, the Weevils saw five players score in double-digits with Denzel McDuffey leading the way with 17 points. DaJaun Jones and Miles Daniels each scored 16, with Lemmie Howard adding 15 and Max Warren with 10. Blakely Cobb added three and Kyler Haynes rounding out the scoring with one point.
UAM will return to Steelman Field House on Thursday, January 14, to face Ouachita Baptist. First tip has been rescheduled due to the women’s contest being canceled due to Ouachita Baptist having to follow Covid Protocols.
UAM and Ouachita Baptist will now tip off at 6p.m.
UAM will travel to Henderson State University to take on the Reddies on Saturday, January 16, with a 4pm tipoff scheduled.
Fans are not permitted to attend UAM or GAC basketball games at this time, but the games are broadcasted across radio as well as UAM’s youtube channel by video feed.
The GAC will continue to evaluate NCAA, federal, state, and local developments and provide updated revisions as further information becomes available.
