Lady Billies lose heartbreaker at home to Hamburg Lions 38-36
The Monticello Lady Billies put up their best performance of the season on Tuesday, February 9 against the Lady Lions of Hamburg.
Coming into the contest, the Lady Billies had lost at Hamburg on February 3, 42-27, followed by a 52-24 loss at Magnolia on Friday, February 5.
Returning home to face Hamburg, the Lady Billies scored the first basket of the contest with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter after a basket by Shariah Singleton. Hamburg would score two threes in the quarter to take a 6-2 lead as the quarter came to an end.
Singleton scored the Lady Billies first points of the second quarter with Kaylin Shepherd connecting on a three with 36 seconds remaining in the half. Hamburg was able to outscore Monticello 8-5 in the half to maintain a 14-7 lead.
The Lady Billies outscored Hamburg 15-13 in the third quarter behind three three-pointers in the quarter and trailed Hamburg 27-22 heading in the final quarter.
Monticello continued to cut into the Lady Lion lead pulling within two points with 6.6 seconds remaining in the game. Hamburg attempted a long down court pass on the inbound that was mishandled giving the Lady Billies one more chance with two seconds remaining, unfortunately for the Lady Billies time was not on their side as Monticello needed to go the full length of the court in that time. The Hamburg defense was able to interfere just enough to allow time to expire allowing the Lady Lions to escape with a two-point, 38-36 victory.
Jayvionna Parks led the Lady Billies with 12 points followed by Shariah Singleton and Kaylin Shepherd with eight points each. Kaylin Shepherd and Lakieah Miller each scored three with Ka’Symone Trotter rounding out the scoring with two points.
The Lady Billies will host Camden Fairview at home on Friday, February 12 for the final game of the regular season. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
