Pirates finish week 1-2 with loses to Dumas, McGehee; win at Smackover
The Drew Central Pirates fell behind in the first quarter at Dumas on Tuesday, February 2 after the Bobcats got out to a 20-9 start. The Pirates came back to outscore Dumas in the second quarter 18-16 with Dumas maintaining a 36-27 lead at the half.
Drew Central bested Dumas in the third 20-19 with Dumas outscoring Drew Central by the same margin in the fourth to secure a nine-point, 75-66, victory.
The Pirates had two players scoring in double digits with Tristian Butler scoring 17 followed by Nick Bailey scoring 10 Kade Bodiford scored nine, Grealin Thomas with seven, and Christian Shaw with six. Drew Burton and Carson Ray added three each with Tralon Miller scoring two.
Drew Central traveled to Smackover on Saturday, February 6 for a makeup game against the Buckaroos.
After a close first quarter with the Pirates outscoring Smackover 15-12, Drew Central took over the game in the second quarter. In the quarter, the Pirates outscored Smackover 20-9 to take a 35-21 lead at the half.
Drew Central’s offense continued to hold the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Smackover 28-7 to take a 63-28 lead. Both teams scored nine points in the fourth as the Pirates took the 72-27 victory.
Kade Bodiford lead the Pirates with 27 points followed by Hunter Goad with 11. Nick Bailey and Grealin Thomas each scored eight, Tristian Butler and Christian Shaw with seven, and Aiden Jones rounding out the scoring with four.
The Pirates returned home on Monday, February 8 to face off with conference rival the McGehee Owls.
McGehee was able to get out in front of the Pirates in the first quarter, outscoring Drew Central 17-16. The Pirates took the lead in the second quarter, closing the quarter 10-6 to take a 26-23 lead at the half.
The Pirates were able to maintain the lead throughout the third quarter with their lead being between one and four points throughout the quarter. McGehee scored the last points of the quarter to cut the Pirates lead to one, 36-35.
Drew Central scored the first basket of the fourth quarter before McGehee was able to go on a 6-0 run to take a 41-39 lead with 5:19 remaining in regulation.
Drew Central tied the contest on the next possession with a basket in the paint by Nick Bailey made the score 41-41 with 5:08 remaining.
McGehee would take the back on the next possession on would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Kade Bodiford hit the final shot of the game, a three at the buzzer, with he Pirates falling short 50-49.
Chris Shaw led the way for the Pirates with 12 points followed by Kade Bodiford with nine. KJ Smith and Tristian Butler each scored eight, Grealin Thomas with seven, and Nick Bailey with five.
The Pirates will close out the regular season this week with District Tournament games scheduled to begin on Saturday in Dumas. The tournament will run through the February 19. There has not been any schedule announcements for the tournament at the time.
